This is a fine disposition on the subject.

On the point of three accounts, one for savings, I have always believed that one should not have savings if one holds any kind of debt. Simply put, the return on the savings, would not be anything like near enough to pay the repay [including interest] the debt.

I agree but i don't think the film would have been as much fun! A lot of people just can't visualize compound interest and how it works. My sister showed me http://www.inspiredtosave.com which is a fancy compound interest calculator. It was only after seeing with my own eyes how the numbers increased that i got interested. Perhaps i'm just greedy...

Karen you are spot on, as ever. Most people need a fund of around £300,000 to £400,000 to maintain their standard of living in retirement. That's achievable if you start early and contribute small amounts, but it is such a scary figure that I think people get put off by the prospect. But as you say, anything is better than procrastination.

Couldn't agree more - this post should be compulsory reading for all women! It's bonkers to spend money making ourselves look lovely now when - for little more than the price of a monthly manicure - we could, with compound interest, secure a really comfortable future for ourselves.
Making pension contributions automatic (opt-out schemes) will help a lot, for many people it's simply that they don't get round to doing anything. Or else they are so confused by choice that they do nothing. And 'nothing' is the worst possible course of action!

Thanks Tracey, I think that home working is perfect for some people, while others prefer to have an office to which they can go and keep distinct from the other parts of their life. Self-employment can become all-consuming!

Hi Marianne,

some very wise words indeed - and something that for me would sum up all these things: "be disciplined!!!"
When I left formal employment (via redundancy) & decided to start up my own web business, it took me a good few months to get over the "sleeping late, working in pj's" thing - but it's much better for me to behave professionally in all aspects... even if my office is only a few steps from the rest of my flat!

Thanks for the insights :)
